I'm work as Propsmaster for a theatre, and I am currently tasked with putting together the kit a Victorian-era barber would have used for his house calls. I'm having a hard time finding any information on what they would have used. I know they would have used a straight razor, but I can't find any research on what their kits would have been. Might you be able to point me in the right direction?

Can you help me identify the manufacturer and possible date of manufacture? | Enlarge | Answer - | | Category - Stroppers Expert - twillard | Question - Hi Twillard, I came across a Vertex razor blade sharpener AHL and wondered how it is used? I am perplexed by the ball bearing at one end?
Kind regards
Ken | Answer - Ken - The sharpener is moved across the edge of the blade in the slot between the ball bearing and the side of the sharpener. Normally, there are two ball bearing, which is a better design. The edge of a blade looks like the teeth of a saw blade under a high power microscope. When a blade gets dull these teeth are out of alignment. The Vertex sharpener realigns these teeth by moving it back and forth across the edge of the blade. Not a great method, but I works. | | Category - Accessories Expert - RAZORUSS | Question - I just received a Whiskers Razor that belonged to my late father-in-law. There seems to be a part missing. It is older than others that I see since the shiny metal stropper says "pat. appl.d for on the metal. Any input on age or value. You might take a look at the patent drawing for US Patent 2044189. Search safety razor patents on this site (tab above) which connects to the US Patent Office web site. | Answer - Sorry, I have no idea. I only collect Gillette Wet shavers (mostly). | | Category - Accessories Expert - RAZORUSS | Question - Hello Shaving Memorabilia Collector ..
I found your email while searching online to find information about Shaving Memorabilia.
I am hopeful you can help me with something I acquired through my Father’s estate.
It is a 1930s (I believe) Bakelite tested Shaving Brush and Case that looks to be in brand new condition. I believe Dad took this on short business trips back then.
I need to know an approximate value and details on this item. My husband, a commercial photographer, took a couple pictures for me. Would it be possible I could send them to you for some information? I will wait to hear from you before I attach them to a document.
The brush is a BEST BADGER with that logo on one side and MARSHALL FIELD on the other. The bottom of the Bakelite case says MADE IN ENGLAND.
Also .. the brush itself is a Butterscotch Color, while the Case is an Ivory color.
Thanks for whatever you can do. Overall and closeup pictures attached.
Best regards,
Ro Spinelli

Mike15144@gmail.com | Enlarge | Answer - I do not have any additional information. | | Category - Stroppers Expert - twillard | Question - Hello, I have in my possession an extremly rare item that is proving very difficult to get valued.
I have a J.R Torrey oil edge dressing witht he original wax or mink oil still wrapped inside, after doing a lot of research I am struggling to find much info on it and I have yet to find another that I can compare with price etc. I have tried getting it appraised however they have all said that they have not dealt with such an item before and have no idea.
Any help would be appreciated.
Louis Emslie | Answer - Please ask another question and attach a picture. | | Category - Safety Razors Expert - robert-13 | Question - Here is my complete Roberts set. I noticed on shaveworld an older post about these but the pricing was exceptionally out of date. Photo album and video demo. I have successfully used it before. It actually shaves rather well, though it must have been pretty special with the thicker, se style de blade. I am from NYC and that is probably the only reason why I have one of these. Is there ANY current market barometer on these things? The prices form the 90s were fairly astronomical. Anyway, thank you for your time/expertise.-Keith

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i19i5lTudV4 | Answer - The only current market barometer that I know of for a rare razor, is to continuously search eBay over a 6-12 months time and see what turns up. In general, I believe prices are lower now than they were in the mid 1990s (Gillette razors being the exception). Another way to gauge the market is to get to know a lot of collectors. There will be another Shaving Collectibles meeting next fall in Ohio. | | Category - Accessories Expert - RAZORUSS | Question - i have a u-magnet from lowell,ma. i was told it was old can you tell me if has a $$$$$$$$$$$
it is in a brass case | Answer - I do not quote value in this forum because it is very subjective, based on condition and subject to change. Contact me direct at tom[at]stropper.com | | Category - Accessories Expert - RAZORUSS | Answer - I assume it is an ODELL. I have one in my collection and have seen others over the years. For more information contact me at tom[at]stropper.com. | | Category - Accessories Expert - RAZORUSS | Question - Hi, I'm doing a project research for school and a Chinese shaving brush manufacturer, do you know if there are any conventions for shaving brushes or anything shaving related in Europe? | Answer - | | Category - Safety Razors Expert - robert-13 | Question - I acquire an unusual safety razor from a Japanese auction. I had never heard of it and none of the research I have done has given me any clues about its origins. It is called the "Evabest" and appears to be a cross between an auto strop and a Gem 1912 type. It takes to old, thick Gem type blades. The razor came with strop and two blades, each branded "Evabest" and no helpful markings. It has some interesting design features, including a mechanism whereby twisting the handle pushes the guard forward to all for blade insertion. I'm wondering if it is a razor that has been rebranded "Evabest" for sale in a specific market, but is better know by another name. The only markings on the razor are "Evabest" and "Patented". I am attaching the photo that best shows the razor off, but I had previously posted a query on another forum that has lots of pictures and a full write up: http://theoriginalsafetytoo.proboards.com/thread/989/razor | Enlarge | Answer - Great pictures, but have never seen anything like this before, with or without the name Evabest.
After looking again at the picture posted here, it looks like a copy of an AutoStrop razor. | | PREV50 1 2 3 4 5 6 NEXT50
